Fall has ushered in and before we know it winter will make her entrance. With it she brings hot chocolate, bundled wardrobes, and merry holidays. However, the frigid temperatures don’t always serve our home with the same sense of cheer. It’s important to make sure that your home is prepared for the icy season ahead. It’s better to think ahead than to find yourself with a headache in the cold!
Here are some tips that we would suggest!
1. Plan and Stock up!—While Myrtle Beach does not receive northern weather it can still get pretty cold out there! Winter storms often include ice, which also includes power outages. We suggest that you prepare your home with the essentials: Non-perishable food and a manual can opener, bottled water, and basic toiletries. Ofcourse, don’t forget to store away a flash light with charged batteries and a lighter for candles.
2. Trim the Trees!—When the hurricanes make their way in to our coast they can tear down and blow over heavy branches that cause major damage and/or injury. If you have low hanging branches near power lines be sure to contact your utility company for information on how to have these safely removed.
3. Turn off outdoor water sources!—Find your water shutoff for all outside lines. Turn on the spigots and empty the hoses. If you have an irrigation system we suggest that you call your irrigation professional to winterize your system
But! Don’t just take our word for it! Here’s a bonus tip from one of our Trusted Myrtle Beach Vendors, SunCoast Building Products and Service, Inc. in Conway. You can contact them at 843-488-2249
Bonus Tip!— Make sure your homes gutters & downspouts are clean and free of debris. When Fall foliage such as leaves and pine needles fall into your gutters they can become clogged and heavy which most of the time will damage them and your home’s exterior. Have your Guttering checked to be sure it’s secure in the event of a winter storm where freezing rain, sleet and snow can freeze inside and onto them. The weight of the ice and snow can damage your gutter system by causing them to sag or pull away from your fascia. We suggest a checkup yearly and to invest in a gutter guard protection system if you live in a heavily wooded or pine area which aids in keeping your gutters and downspouts maintenance free all year long.

In our last post we discussed all of the things you should consider when creating your kitchen design. One of those considerations was storage. Checkout this post from Houzz to assess how much storage your home and family might need!

First and foremost, your layout is going to be the most key to ensuring that your kitchen design is the most efficient that it can be. Your layout will determine the placement of your appliances, cabinetry, and your need for paint. Additionally, the kitchen design will affect the number of people who can move about the kitchen before it gets too crowded. Traffic is a very important consideration to have when creating your kitchen design.
Do you love to cook? If so, you may want to consider your method of cooking and how you tend to move throughout the kitchen. Your kitchen design’s layout can be one of your best tools. Functionality is key!
Another important consideration is storage! How much storage do you need? Where within your kitchen design would you like to place storage?
Next, what colors will you use? First, what template of colors do you want to work with? What is the overarching theme and feel you hope to create? From these colors decide first the color of your floors, cabinets, and counter tops. These elements are more permanent within your kitchen and help to bring the kitchen design’s main feel to life. Now, for more fun: paint, backsplash, appliances, accents. The options are endless when creating your kitchen design. Have fun with it! This is your space. It is the heart of your home. Make sure that your kitchen design represents you and your home well!
Our third stop: lighting. When contemplating your kitchen design don’t be afraid of too much lighting. If you don’t need it, you turn it off. If you need it and it isn’t a part of your kitchen then you have to install more lighting, this can be frustrating and definitely more costly. When choosing lighting, be sure to consider the kitchen design’s layout. Where will you need light? Where will you need the option to dim lights? Do you need lights in any unique areas, such as around the baseboards, under your cabinets, inside of your cabinets, etc?
Lastly, think of what extra things might make your kitchen the most efficient. Do you need a special type of charging port? A custom designed pantry? Sliding cabinets? Hands-free sink? Be sure to add those special details to ensure that your kitchen design is the most efficient for you.
Remember! The most important thing about your kitchen is that you love it!
