A Guide to Remodeling Your Half-Bath

When it comes to remodeling your bathroom, your first thoughts may go to your master bath. However, your half-bath may need love, too! A half bath by definition is small, with room for only one or two amenities. This is because they are designed to provide limited services most commonly used by guests. These are important things to keep in mind when remodeling your half-bath.

A half-bathroom is smaller than a full bath, but it still serves an important function in making your home more livable and pleasing. The room is often used by guests and commonly found towards the front of your home. When planning your remodel, it is important to keep that guest traffic in mind. Remodeling your half-bath can be an interesting puzzle, but with these design ideas, Re-Builders is ready to help you get started on your half-bath renovation journey!

The Illusion of Larger Tiles

If your powder room is small, it can seem even smaller with the wrong flooring. Dark wood or thin tiles can play into the tightness of the space. Using the illusion of large tiles in small bathrooms can make the room appear larger. You can also try adding a large backsplash above the sink to make the vanity space appear wider as well.

Keep it Light

When discussing color in a remodel, the most important piece of information to know is that dark colors create smaller-feeling spaces. In small spaces, dark, clashing colors can make the room feel even smaller than it already is. Colors such as dark blues and purples, blacks, or maroons can create a claustrophobic space in your half-bath. Instead, try choosing a monochromatic color scheme and stay with light colors—a soft gray or seafoam green wall, for example—to avoid that “tiny room” feel. White trim and cabinetry can also help keep the room open and airy.

Depending on what flooring you choose, it might be a good idea to coordinate that color with your walls as well. This will make the room appear more seamless, adding to the illusion of greater space.

Pops of Color

Light colors and white trim doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your own style and pops of color. Instead of expressing your creativity on the walls, try incorporating your color into bathroom accessories and decor! Bright towels and shower mats are a great way to bring in a vibrant color without taking away from the illusion of space you’re trying to create. A patterned rug or wall decor can add texture and character to your small half-bath. The best part is, these pieces can be easily changed and rearranged as your own personal style grows.

Simple Goes A Long Way

Maximalism can be done beautifully in larger rooms. However, when remodeling your half-bath, you may want to leave to clutter out. Keeping your half-bathroom simple and clean with just enough items is key. One of the biggest spaces that many people make mistakes in is decorating their half-bathroom with too many small items. To avoid this, keep it minimal in your bathroom and add accessories around it as needed. Small photos on the wall or plants on the sink counter are great ways to bring a little personality to a small room without overwhelming the space.

Raise The Roof (Not Literally)

Raising the visibility of your half-bath ceiling can make the entire room look larger. This is a foolproof way to make your bathroom look bigger and more organized. Updating or adding a thinner molding that is painted to match your ceiling can make your walls appear taller. Replace bulky hanging ceiling lights with recessed lighting for a cleaner appearance, and add sconces that send light upward in order to blur the boundary between wall and ceiling, making the room appear larger.

Show Creativity With Your Sink

In smaller bathrooms, where space optimization is paramount, a trough sink emerges as an ideal solution. Their elongated design allows for both form and function, providing ample room for multiple users to access them simultaneously while also creating an illusion of greater space. It can also allow for a bit more flat counter space for decor, hand soaps, and other accessories. On the contrary, try to avoid pedestal sinks, as they can be hard to place strategically in a smaller space due to their cylindrical design.

Rethinking Storage

With so much stuff in our bathrooms, it’s hard to keep things organized. The first step is reducing what you have to have there. Remove any extra towels or cleaning supplies that can be put elsewhere in the house. Then start by sorting out everything else that’s taking up space. If possible, move all non-necessary supplies to a linen closet or storage space in a separate bathroom.

One way to maximize the limited space in a small bathroom is to choose a countertop that extends along the wall behind the toilet. This extra space, which is often unused, can be used for storing tissues or other items. This can be a great shelf for those important things – like medicine, toiletries, and potpourri.

Don’t Forget About Ventilation

Ventilation is important! Not only does ventilation make a small bathroom feel more comfortable, but it also helps get rid of steam so that the paint, drywall, and your personal items aren’t damaged. It is recommended that you have enough ventilation to avoid excessive humidity which can harm paint and drywall. Usually, bathroom fans are ceiling-mounted that are used to suck out hot and steamy air from your small room and straight out the exterior of your home. When doing a bathroom remodel, these are usually installed during the process to avoid damage.

In a half bathroom, ceiling fans provide the same benefits as they do in any room: They create a feeling of air movement and coolness, which can improve your home’s health, comfort, and energy efficiency. Even if your half-bath includes a window to the outside, it is against better judgment to not include ventilation in such a small room.
